So…. (drumroll)… here is our list of the top 10 PC games of all time.
- Never Winter Nights
- Space War
- Elite
- Minesweeper
- Half-Life
- Civilisation
- World of Warcraft
- The Sims
- Tetris
- Doom
And now for some information about these and reasons why they are included…
Never Winter Nights
The first game that has made it onto our list is Never Winter Nights, one of the first multiplayer role playing games. This game was a pioneer in introducing innovations such as custom guilds, which are a part of modern RPGs. This game would have been even more successful had it not been launched at a time when internet gaming was expensive due to its limited access.
Space War
The next game to make it to our list of the top 10 PC games of all times is Space War. This was developed in the 1960s by a group of MIT students who wrote the code for a DEC php1 computer. Space War is a simple shooting game with two ships in a gravity well shooting at each other.
Interestingly, unlike other contemporary games that took advantage of the latest software technology in their creation this particular game used very little code. The fact that it was nevertheless as engrossing as the others warrants its inclusion in our top 10 PC games listing.
Elite
Elite is another game that was developed in the 1980s. It was a pioneer in using 3D wire frame graphics, thus making it very advanced in its era. Everything is unique about this game, including its title. It offers an open end game play allowing players to use up to 200 different worlds, depending on their choices.. This game boasts excellent programming which enables it to store 200 different worlds in just 32 KB of memory. A worthy inclusion in this top 10 PC games of all times list!
Minesweeper
The next game to make it onto our top 10 PC games list is Minesweeper. Given that this game is bundled with Windows and comes with the operating system there are not many gamers who haven’t played it. The game play is simple, with tiny mines ticking away and all the player has to do is mark them with the help of their proximity to each other. This game has a simple concept and code and is very easy to learn and get addicted to (and millions have!).
Half-Life
Half-Life, the next game to make it to our top 10 PC games list, is a first person combat game involving a good storyline and eye catching visuals that flow smoothly. This game took gaming to new levels of multiplay and is played online with various other players. Sometimes players group together and form clans to face off against other such clans.
Civilization
One of the most popular PC games is Civilization, a truly addictive game which can be termed both simple and complex at the same time. Players start with a basic group of settlers and then they have to take over the world or build a spaceship to get to Alpha Centuri. It is a game involving planning and strategy where you can build up an entire civilisation in a matter of hours.
World of Warcraft
Another well known game to cut its way into our top 10 PC games list is World of Warcraft. This RPG has become a culture in itself and there are millions of online players who opt for the multiplay campaigns. World of Warcraft is again an open end game which gives players many options to choose from. The decisions they make affect the whole game play.
Like Half-Llife, groups have been formed online to pit against each other. This is a game that players can easily get addicted to, so much so that some have been known to forget there is a line between their online and offline profiles!
The Sims
The Sims is a worthy addition to our top 10 PC games list. It is a straightforward game which has no complex strategies, nor a gripping storyline. The secret lies in its simplicity. The game involves a family which goes about doing their daily chores just as a normal family would. There is no end to the game and players can keep playing on and on.
It all started with SimCity where players control the entire city and this game is the outcome of the mundane desire of an individual to control something.
Tetris
Tetris makes a change to the adventure and action filled multiplay games and is a simple block building game to form lines. It involves no complex problem solving ability and can be played by all ages. It is a game based on skill and cognitive dexterity and unlike action packed adventure games it offers you a sure way to relax. This may be a surprise inclusion as a top 10 PC games participant to some people.
Doom
Last but not the least is Doom, an original first person shooter game. It is widely recognised for its excellent soundtrack, graphics and the variety of weapons used. It stood out among other games of its era because it was given away for free initially. There are still hardcore fans of the game and there are people who are addicted to it. This game is multiplayer with players playing it over the Ethernet.
