Top 10 PC Games of All TimeWe have consolidated a list of the Top 10 PC games of all times below taking into account gamers’ feedback and critical remarks, technological advances, locales and storytelling.

Playing PC games can be relaxing and stimulating at the same time.  Most games involve mental strategies which allow players to role play and work out strategies for characters.

Often players will get totally engaged in the game and immersed in the role they are playing, leaving their real worlds behind them for hours on end.  Such is the power and intrigue of not just the top 10 PC games but most of the really good ones too. Avid gamers of all ages can get totally hooked!

This results in players sharing their results and experiences, forming their opinions about what are the best games and making up their own top 10 PC games lists just like this one.  The reality of course is that each player’s interests and opinions are different so not many people will come up with identical lists.

Hence the following disclaimer about our choice of the top 10 PC games…

… this is not claimed to be a definitive list and the chances are you will have different opinions about which games should be included and excluded. So please don’t take it too seriously and instead have some fun comparing our choices with yours.

So…. (drumroll)… here is our list of the top 10 PC games of all time.

  • Never Winter Nights
  • Space War
  • Elite
  • Minesweeper
  • Half-Life
  • Civilisation
  • World of Warcraft
  • The Sims
  • Tetris
  • Doom

And now for some information about these and reasons why they are included…

Never Winter Nights

The first game that has made it onto our list is Never Winter Nights, one of the first multiplayer role playing games. This game was a pioneer in introducing innovations such as custom guilds, which are a part of modern RPGs.  This game would have been even more successful had it not been launched at a time when internet gaming was expensive due to its limited access.

Space War

The next game to make it to our list of the top 10 PC games of all times is Space War.  This was developed in the 1960s by a group of MIT students who wrote the code for a DEC php1 computer.  Space War is a simple shooting game with two ships in a gravity well shooting at each other.

Interestingly, unlike other contemporary games that took advantage of the latest software technology in their creation this particular game used very little code. The fact that it was nevertheless as engrossing as the others warrants its inclusion in our top 10 PC games listing.

Elite

Elite is another game that was developed in the 1980s. It was a pioneer in using 3D wire frame graphics, thus making it very advanced in its era.  Everything is unique about this game, including its title. It offers an open end game play allowing players to use up to 200 different worlds, depending on their choices..  This game boasts excellent programming which enables it to store 200 different worlds in just 32 KB of memory.  A worthy  inclusion in this top 10 PC games of all times list!

Minesweeper

The next game to make it onto our top 10 PC games list is Minesweeper.  Given that this game is bundled with Windows and comes with the operating system there are not many gamers who haven’t played it.  The game play is simple, with tiny mines ticking away and all the player has to do is mark them with the help of their proximity to each other. This game has a simple concept and code and is very easy to learn and get addicted to (and millions have!).

Half-Life

Half-Life, the next game to make it to our top 10 PC games list, is a first person combat game involving a good storyline and eye catching visuals that flow smoothly.  This game took gaming to new levels of multiplay and is played online with various other players.  Sometimes players group together and form clans to face off against other such clans.

Civilization

One of the most popular PC games is Civilization, a truly addictive game which can be termed both simple and complex at the same time.  Players start with a basic group of settlers and then they have to take over the world or build a spaceship to get to Alpha Centuri.  It is a game involving planning and strategy where you can build up an entire civilisation in a matter of hours.

World of Warcraft

Another well known game to cut its way into our top 10 PC games list is World of Warcraft. This RPG has become a culture in itself and there are millions of online players who opt for the multiplay campaigns.  World of Warcraft is again an open end game which gives players many options to choose from.  The decisions they make affect the whole game play.

Like Half-Llife, groups have been formed online to pit against each other. This is a game that players can easily get addicted to, so much so that some have been known to forget there is a line between their online and offline profiles!

The Sims

The Sims is a worthy addition to our top 10 PC games list. It is a straightforward game which has no complex strategies, nor a gripping storyline.  The secret lies in its simplicity.  The game involves a family which goes about doing their daily chores just as a normal family would.  There is no end to the game and players can keep playing on and on.

It all started with SimCity where players control the entire city and this game is the outcome of the mundane desire of an individual to control something.

Tetris

Tetris makes a change to the adventure and action filled multiplay games and is a simple block building game to form lines.  It involves no complex problem solving ability and can be played by all ages. It is a game based on skill and cognitive dexterity and unlike action packed adventure games it offers you a sure way to relax.  This may be a surprise inclusion as a top 10 PC games participant to some people.

Doom

Last but not the least is Doom, an original first person shooter game.  It is widely recognised for its excellent soundtrack, graphics and the variety of weapons used.  It stood out among other games of its era because it was given away for free initially.  There are still hardcore fans of the game and there are people who are addicted to it. This game is multiplayer with players playing it over the Ethernet.

So there you have it – our Top 10 PC Games of All Time choices!

Note About Our Top 10 PC Games List….

….each gamer has their own tastes, likes and dislikes so it is unlikely that any two such lists will be the same. So we are not claiming this to be a definitive list, just our opinion which you may or may not agree with!

The thing that strikes us when we go through this list is that there are many games that are so popular that they have been made into a series, making them almost evergreen.

These sequencial top 10 PC games are the ones that flood the market and compete against each other for the Numero Uno position year after year.

Now let’s take a more detailed look at them, in reverse order from #10 to #1:

#10

Crysis 2, a regular in most peoples’ top 10 PC games lists, is a pioneer in the graphical first person shooter game.  Crysis 2 has been developed to be played in Multiplatform.  Developed by Crytek and produced by Electronic Arts, it is a game that involves shooting and action in the streets of New York City among aliens and other war sleuths.

The Company is getting more and more well known and they have made huge strides in their shooting mechanics, presentation and artificial Intelligence.  Cysis 2 is a visual spectacle and it is a game that has been played at least once by most avid players.  Thus its prominence in this 2011 Top 10 PC Games list.

#9

Shotgun 2: Total War is the second game that may be considered a worthy component of our top 10 PC games list. The Creative Assembly brought out this game as a series and the game surprisingly has been trimmed, making it more manageable and less complex.  This came as a delight to lots of players and it takes them to a new visually updated Japan! It is a strategical game, loved by players all over.

#8

The next game we have included in our 2011 top 10 PC games list is Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.  This game, developed by CD Projekt RED, is a huge role playing experience based on the fiction of Andrzej Sapkowski.  This sequel boasts totally upgraded playing visuals since the developers have rewritten pretty much everything .

The technology has been reworked to give players an awesome experience plus the character interactions are amazing.  Further good news is that the basic elements of choice and consequence have not been lost during the process.

#7

Set in a time before its predecessors, Deus Ex: Human Revolution involves people relying on implants to enhance their abilities. It has forced its way into this top 10 PC games list due to the fact that it is much more advanced than the other games in the series.  It boasts a splendid storyline, filled with conspiracy and betrayal, many ways to approach each encounter and a flexible character development system.  Developed by Eidos Montreal, this game certainly warrants its lofty position among the top 10 PC games.

#6

The next game in this top 10 PC games list is Star Wars: The Old Republic.  With a splendid story line, character representation and graphics, it is a MMO that players always look forward to playing.  The popularity of all the Star Wars games justifies all the hard work put into their creation by BioWare.  It is not surprising that these games find themselves into most critics’ lists of top 10 PC games each year.

#5

Another creation of BioWare, Dragon Age II, is a game that has been upgraded without compromising the game play.  The original Dragon Age had a modernised take on the classic Baldur’s Gate’s gameplay.   Players get to role play a human character called Hawke and there are references and familiar characters from the earlier games in the series too.  This game however is far superior in art and design and promises you an awesome overall experience.

#4

The next game to make its name in the single player game category in our top 10 PC games list for 2011 is Portal 2.  The witty maniac, Glodos, the robot is back with some crazy puzzles.  The most important feature of this sequel is its co-operative mode.  Its developer Valve has made a slight update and now it stars two robots with their own portal guns.

#3

Top 10 PC games lists wouldn’t be complete without a creation of id Software.  Their long awaited game, Rage, is all set to burn the market with its stunning locations and designs.  Unlike the earlier game in the series involving Mars and closed corridors, Rage has moved on to a brighter and open post-apocalyptic world.   The shooting mechanics have been technologically upgraded and this is a game most gamers will look forward to playing.

#2

The most technologically advanced, sci-fi experience among these top 10 PC games has to be Mass Effect 3.  It is a modern role playing console with a vivid cast of characters to give players a unique journey.  Developed by BioWare, Mass Effect 3 has even surpassed the masterpiece Mass Effect 2. (Incidentally Mass Effect 2 is included in our list of Top 10 PC Games 2010)

** #1 **

The Numero Uno of the top 10 PC games for 2011in our opinion has to be The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.  The name came from a region from the earlier sequel, and is where the game is set.  Bethesda, the developer has brought out this game using the latest technology and it is widely considered to be the best among role playing games.  The visuals in this game are amazing and this is a gaming experience no avid gamer would really want to miss.

Top 10 PC Games 2011 Conclusion

The list we have compiled here is a consolidation of the best technologically designed games with great storylines and excellent player feedback. We urge new gamers to play them and we would be surprised if they don’t get hooked on them for hours!

Top 10 PC Games 2010

Top 10 PC Games 2010The top 10 PC games of 2010 are mostly sequels of games released in previous years.  So there is not a big difference between earlier top 10 PC games lists and our one below for 2010.

This comes as no surprise, because games are technologically updated every year and the art and design that go into their making are forever raising the bar in the gaming industry.

Certain game developers strive to make the gaming experience so awesome that they dominate the top 10 games list every year.

Note about Top 10 PC Games Lists…

In our opinion no one’s list is definitive and no one can realistically claim to be the ultimate authority on the subject. That’s because gamers are individuals all with different personal preferences and opinions.

The list we are providing below has been put together taking into account a combination of style, design, game play, technology involved, and  player ratings.

Our Top 10 PC Games 2010 list, starting with 10th position and moving up to position #1…

#10

The first game that we are going to include in our top 10 PC games of 2010 list is S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat.  This game is set right after its predecessor Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl involving a character called Alexander Degtyarev who investigates a failed operation for the government.  The crash sites are very realistic and apart from the main quest, there are many side quests too for players to enhance their expertise.

#9

The next game to hit the Top 10 PC games list is Splinter Cell: Conviction.  Players take on the character of Sam Fisher, who is a bit of a nutcase and tells his story in an intriguing way.  The execution of the game is first class and the game has an awesome storyline with an immersing soundtrack.  It is a fun filled game which would be even better still if it lasted a bit longer.  Having said that, the game’s cooperative mode is good so it’s a bit of a shame that the single player campaign is quite short.  Nevertheless it holds a place in our top 10 PC games list due to its splendid features.

#8

The next game which has deservedly made it to the top 10 PC games of 2010 list is Metro 2033. This is a horror come action game which takes players to a gloomy yet well defined atmosphere where depression seems to creep to all the nooks and crannies of the locales.

The journey is quite long and it has its share of dramatic events and twists which keep players engaged in the game.  This game requires good observation and exploration for players to make full use of its intricate design and technology.

#7

Just Cause 2, another game to add to the 2010 top 10 PC games list, is an action packed adventure game, set in the picturesque island of Panau in Southeast Asia.  It gives players the freedom to choose to drive one of 100 vehicles, to blow up a fuel tank or do almost any crazy stunt that they feel like.  Players get to explore the whole island and there are a variety of things to do.  This game has brilliant visuals and is fantastic value for all that you get.

#6

The next game that we are including in the list of top 10 PC games for 2010 is Assassin’s Creed 2.  This game carries the tradition and the culture of its series beautifully. It is a game that has been upgraded to give players better weapons, missions, stealth techniques and greater controls.  This gives you an awesome experience in making your way through the open world.

#5

The fifth place in this top 10 PC games list goes to Bio Shock 2.  This game is a sequel obviously and takes a backstage in storytelling.  Arguably it is not quite as impressive or shocking as the original version, but it is still a really interesting game to play.  The new feature to look for in this game is its set of moral quandaries which truly immerses its players, plus its improved combat mechanics are a treat.  This latest version also has the added feature of a multi player mode.

#4

The next featured game is Battlefield: Bad Company 2.  With single player and multiplayer mode, this game draws its fans due to its huge maps, destructible environments, vehicles, sound design and so on.  It is a treat to the eyes.  Though just the single player campaign is a 6 -7 hour cinematic experience, players still come back for the multiplayer mode.

#3

Our 2010 top 10 PC games list has Civilisation V as its number 3.  A game played for a long time now Civilisation V is a complete power exercising game with the player’s perspective being towards building his/her empire.  The interface is friendlier than ever but the game is as complex as it was when first released.

#2

Mass Effect 2, a game which features in almost all top 10 PC games lists, is a sci-fi role playing game where players take the journey of Commander Sheppard to avert an impending Galactic Apocalypse.  It has a huge following because of its impressive storyline, interactive role play and picturesque locations.  Players get engaged in the game because it’s their own decisions that make a mark on the outcome of the story.  All the technical features, soundtrack and art designs have been incorporated in this sequel to capture fans of the earlier sequels and many more too.

** #1 **

After much anticipation Star Craft 2: Wings of Liberty, our #1 choice, was finally released.  The developer Blizzard went to great lengths to maintain the core features of the game while still incorporating some impressive new ones.  This game, which is considered almost a national sport in South Korea, marks its lofty position largely due to the fact that its single player campaign is also a hit among the multiplayer games.

It has not taken a backstage in the multiplayer mode though.  It boasts three fractions in the multiplayer mode and each is different.  This awesome game keeps players immersed in its new tricks and tactics and its amazing production value. It should come as a no surprise that this game tops our list of top 10 PC games 2010.
